Well, one of the great things about moving to California is that there are so many great fly fishing streams within driving range. With the Sierra Nevada mountains about 2-3 hours away, there are many snow fed rivers and streams with wild Rainbow and Brown Trout in them. I’ve been pouring over books and maps learning the area and found a great fly fishing shop near my house that has been very helpful. www.sanjoseflyshop.com
Putah Creek
Last week, Scott Simmerok and I went and explored a new stream for both of us. It’s called Putah Creek and claims to be the top trout stream for big fish during the spawning months of October-April. When we went, the water was a little high, but we found some decent shoals and riffles to wade. In one area, we clawed our way through blackberry bushes, low lying limbs, stickers and water to get out to an island on the river. After all that work, we walked up on a lady in an innertube and a guy sitting in a lawnchair. I guess we didn’t need to claw through the jungle. Turned out, there was a parking lot right above the spot a few hundred yards down from where we parked. Oh well, I guess what’s important is that you learn from your mistakes.
I’m heading out Monday to explore Coyote Creek which is real close to my house. It’s supposed to have alot of smaller fish but be very scenic.
In honor of the new fly fishing territory I’m exploring, I’ve been reading (again) Norman McLean’s “A River Runs Through It”. I love the line “I am haunted by waters”. Sometimes I think cold trout water is running through my veins instead of blood.
